FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS What is the solution? Simply put, a union that focuses on the professionalism of its members and the needs of students. After all--and we hear it all the time--aren't we all in it for the kids? We will maintain this site and follow the actions of the union until that happens. The teachers in my district claim they haven't received a raise in a number of years. Is that true? They may have not received a general raise, but "step" raises are written into most contracts. Steps are automatic increases, based on years worked, with no regard for competency or effectiveness. Imagine a job in sales in which raises are issued without taking the previous year's performance, work ethic, or goals into account. It's not reality. Automatic raises eliminate the need to improve and excel. Yet it's commonplace in public schools and the unfortunate thing is the lack of need to be better employees impacts students--our future. Here is a portion of the step chart from the Indianapolis contract:
As you can see, regardless of negotiated raises, teachers' pay increases 37.4% from years 1 to 10. Does my district have ISTA insurance? It's best to call your district leaders to verify, but the Education Intelligence Agency has posted an ISTA document which spells out the insurance costs for each district. Who are you? Education Action Group Foundation in a 501(c)(3) public charity focused on education reform. We pay particular attention to organized labor's attempt to stifle reform if it in any way harms labor--regardless of the positive impact on students. I saw the video with Dick Morris. How much did you pay him? Mr. Morris provided his time and expertise at no charge. We are grateful he volunteered to bring attention to this critical issue. Got a question?
